Several of the days during our trip were miserable – grey, cold, and drizzly. However, that didn't stop us from enjoying local sightseeing spots. It was just lousy weather for taking photographs!
Here are a few places we dropped by.

For many years, I heard from friends about the Adachi Museum of Art in Shimane Prefecture. They all raved about it – especially about the gardens. After many years of dreaming about it, we finally managed to get there, and it did not disappoint! We were there off-season, and so spring had only just begun. Regardless, the gardens were stunning, as were the twentieth-century paintings and artworks on display. I loved the more modern pieces in the annex the most. Some brought me to tears.
The gardens are not particularly old – the museum was founded in 1970 – but since 2003, they has been ranked the best in Japan by the "Journal of Japanese Gardening". I can certainly see why! (My photos hardly do the gardens justice. I highly recommend doing an online search.) My husband had seen a small shrine called Sasafuku Jinja on the map and wanted to check it out so off we went. We saw only a few people, mostly elderly ladies working in their gardens, and just enjoyed the peace and quiet of being outside on a beautiful day.

I was not familiar with them at all before moving to Japan but now they brighten up my garden every spring. They are wild so it's not easy to find plants to add to your garden. However, years ago, a dear friend gave me some plants from her mother's garden after I had told her how much I loved them. It took a while for the plant to settle into their new home but now they require almost no care or fuss. The season has just begun and I couldn't be happier!
Name: Iris Japonica, also called shaga, fringed iris, or butterfly flower. Native to China and Japan For more information: https://www.flower-db.com/en/flowers/iris-japonica |
