Christmas in Japan took some getting used to. Unlike in many countries, Christmas Day is a regular work day and with Christmas Eve being the main event. On December 24th, families and groups of friends often gather for home parties that feature KFC chicken and strawberry shortcake, along with a few presents for any children present. Couples, whether married or dating, often plan special outings since Christmas Eve is viewed by many as the most romantic night of the year, even more so than Valentine's Day. (I have learned not to ask young people about their Christmas plans because they often assume I am asking if they have a date for Christmas Eve which, of course, isn't my intention at all!) Once Christmas Eve is over, so are the Christmas festivities. Many decorations start coming down on Christmas morning in preparation for the Japanese New Year, which always makes me a little sad. Regardless, I've found a way to enjoy Christmas here and look forward to it every year. (These photos were taken at my workplace, various locations around Osaka, and the German Christmas Market that used to be set up every year in the city center.)
