TOAD LILIES
I love toad lilies. They are one of my favourite plants in my garden, along with hydrangeas and camellias, and they continually delight me when blooming season arrives. Toad lilies are endemic to Japan, making them well-suited to the extreme weather and humidity of my area. Every year, I’m amazed at how they thrive with very little effort on my part, which is one of reasons of why I love them so much!
Finding toad lilies for sale can be challenging, so I usually purchase my plants at temple sales, farmers' markets, or specialty shops that focus on native plants. However, these are often not in bloom when I buy them, so I rarely know what I'm getting. Thankfully, I’ve been very fortunate thus far!
All the photos below were taken in my garden during the last week of October and the first week of November, 2024. The first two photos feature what I consider “futsu” (common or ordinary) toad lilies. The rest range from common varieties (heavily speckled in dark or light purple) to more unusual ones (white, yellow, or light pastel petals). Enjoy!
